Hello hello. Here are a few photos from Australia. Click on the photos to see larger versions. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Of course all photos are copyright Eugene McDevitt 2008.
Hello and thank you for your visit.
My name is Eugene McDevitt. I'm a miner, cutter & wholesaler of Koroit opal (a variety of Australian boulder opal from a small area in southwest Queensland known as Koroit). I own opal mines in Koroit. I'm from the USA and live in Safety Harbor, Florida (north of Clearwater/St Pete). The wholesale opal business has been my more than full-time occupation since 1993.
I travel between the USA and Australia often during the mining season (between April and October). Probably I spend a total of 4 to 6 months in Australia and the rest of the year in the USA. My main business is wholesaling opals I have cut to jewelers and gemstone dealers. I also sell rough Koroit boulder opal.
Koroit is an opal field (opal mining area), not a town. There is neither electricity nor running water.
My mine is an underground (shaft & tunnel) mine. The tunnels are about 42 feet (13m) below the surface.
More information can be found on my website: www.koroit.com.
By the end of May, I expect to be back in Koroit. I plan to be writing a blog about what I find & experience while in the outback. Hopefully, I will be updating weekly.
